After you file

If you got a CP2000, read it carefully. 

 

  1. Do not ignore the notice.  
  2. Compare the IRS listed records to see where the mismatch is.
  3. Take action. If you don't respond by the due date, it may lead to further IRS action
    1. Get your information together
      1. Receipts, 
      2. Invoices
      3. Canceled checks, 
      4. And any items that support the items on your tax return.
    2. Prepare a letter and respond by the due date.
      1. If you agree, indicate this on the form and pay any owed amount. 
      2. If you disagree, send a written explanation with supporting documents to the address on the notice.
      3. Make sure the letter is legitimate;  don't provide information if it seems suspicious, and verify with the IRS directly.
