AGI higher than sum of “Personal Income” in TurboTax Desktop — capital gains mismatch with Schedule D?
I am trying to reconcile my AGI in TurboTax Home & Business Desktop (This is for 2024. I went to look for something else and spotted this issue.) and am seeing a mismatch between the “Personal Income” sections and Form 1040.
Context:
My original return only had W-2 income and investment income (no business/rental yet)
When I sum the items shown under Personal → Personal Income, the total is lower than the AGI reported on Form 1040
Investigation:
In Forms mode, I checked Form 1040 and noticed that Line 7 (capital gains) shows a different number than what I see in the Investment Income section
It appears that the UI is showing different totals than what flows into Schedule D / Form 1040
Questions:
Is the “Personal Income” tab expected to match AGI exactly, or are there items that are netted differently?
Could capital gains/losses be netted on Schedule D in a way that makes the UI totals not directly additive?
What is the best way to trace AGI back to source forms (e.g., 8949 → Schedule D → 1040)?
Is there any possibility of double counting (e.g., interest/dividends appearing in multiple sections), or is this purely a presentation issue?
I want to make sure my return is correct before proceeding with an amendment.
