After you file
If your tax return has already been accepted by the IRS, it is too late to change the zip code. If your refund was being direct deposited, the wrong zip code will have no effect. If you asked for a refund to be mailed to you, there might be a delay in receiving it.
If your return has not been accepted, please wait to see if it's rejected. If it is, then you can change the zip.
We recommend that you file Form 8822, Change of Address, as soon as possible.
If your refund doesn't arrive within 2-3 weeks, you will need to fill out form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund and mail it to the IRS. You can get the mailing address from where to file and use the address for NOT enclosing a payment. Expect that it will take two months or more to get your refund.
