After you file

If you want to deduct charitable contributions on your tax return, you have to itemize your deductions on Schedule A of your 1040. If you didn't itemize your deductions on your original return, first, figure out if you have more Itemized Deductions than the Standard Deduction for your filing status to determine if you should itemize your deductions.

Review the following TurboTax articles to determine if there are additional items that you can deduct on your Schedule A.  20 Common Tax Deductions: Examples for Your Next Tax Return, What Are Itemized Tax Deductions?, and Standard Deduction vs. Itemized Deductions: Which Is Better?

Secondly, if you determine that you need to amend your return to add your charitable contributions,  wait until your tax return is fully processed and you receive your refund or your balance due is deducted from your account.  In addition, the 1040X used to amend your tax return isn’t available yet but should be ready by the end of next week.

Refer to the TurboTax article: Amending Your Income Tax Return and How to Correct Federal Tax Returns for additional information.

If you live in a state that requires you to file an income tax return, don’t forget to prepare an amendment for your state. For instructions to amend your state return,  refer to the TurboTax Help article How do I amend my state tax return?
