How to Identify a Qualified Manufacturer?
The IRS provides resources to help you identify QMs. While a comprehensive list may not always be readily available, here are some steps you can take:
- Check the Manufacturer's Website: Many QMs will proudly display their QM status on their website or product materials.
- Contact the Manufacturer Directly: If you're unsure, reach out to the manufacturer and ask if they are a QM and what their QM code is.
If you are going to mail your return, I recommend verifying the QMID at the manufacturer's website. Otherwise, if it's incorrect, the IRS will deny the credit, requiring you to file an amended return.
Say you are buying a heat pump. Companies A and B sell the same model. They are the retailers or wholesalers, but are not the manufacturer for this product. You need the manufacturer's QMID. A and/or B may manufacture some of the products they sell. They could have their own QMID, which would be invalid for the heat pump.
Numerous OPs have reported issues with the QMID they entered. It could be a TurboTax issue or an IRS issue
