After you file
@meech1011 wrote:So, all of that was good. I had to do it twice and it said yay, you have filed your taxes sooner than whatever percentage it was of other people. I finally got back a response that the state was accepted, but federal was not and I got my money from the state deposited into my account. No federal. They wanted more information and it could be because I had recently gotten divorced, but I tried to contact them and cannot get in touch with them
You may be using the term "accepted" incorrectly. The term "accepted" is not the same thing as "approved." "Accepted" is a term used only about the efile status--not the merits of the return. "Accepted" means the efiled return was correctly formatted such that the IRS agreed to start processing the return. If the IRS told you they need more info, it sounds like they accepted your return to begin processing it, but are encountering an issue when processing it, so the approval is delayed. If so, it should still show up in this IRS "Where's My Refund" tool as being processed:
https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund
Here are some tips when using that tool:
- Be sure you enter the correct tax year, SSN, and filing status.
- Be sure you are using only the Federal refund amount. Do not include any state refund or any total refund or net refund (Fed and State) that TurboTax may have provided on a summary screen.
- Look at your actual Federal return to get the Federal refund amount to use in the tool, i.e., your Form 1040, Line 35a.
If you need to phone the IRS, you may encounter a robot. Just tell it you need to speak to a representative about your account. You may have to keep telling it that a couple or more times regardless of what it asks.
IRS: 800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday
IMO, best time is early AM when they open.
