After you file
if the IRS is auditing 2020, if possible, you should talk to the agent about including any adjustments you have in the audit results. However, you may be denied since it is past the latest date to amend if you would be due a refund. generally, the latest date unextended for a timely filed return was May 17, 2024, or if an extension was filed then the latest date was October 15, 2024. It taxes are owed there is no cutoff date.
however, if you filed late then the IRS says this
Generally, to claim a refund, you must file an amended return within 3 years after the date you filed your original return or 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you filed early, count from the April tax deadline.
Unless the IRS specifically asked you to file an amended return, as to filing now, if permitted, because of late filing of 2020, you should talk to the IRS first. It cannot be e-filed so it could sit in a mailbag for months before it is reviewed.
bad news. 2020 is no longer supported by Turbotax so this makes amending it impossible using the app. any amendment would have to be done manually. if there are significant $$$$ involved you may want to consult with a tax pro or use .
