I need advice, amended 2020 tax return, we should have received a larger refund, now IRS sent a letter that we owe past due taxes for that year.
I amended our 2020 tax return, twice. We normally file separately. Back in 2020 I originally claimed our son. Then when the actual refund checks came, it was less because of the stimulus checks. So I amended then to put my son under my husband.
I amended again in January 2024 to file jointly. According to TurboTax at that time, we should have received a refund. In January 2025 we received a notice that we are due a refund of over $4000. We never received it. I called the IRS in March, they spent a long time trying to figure it out. Said they'd work on it and if we didn't hear anything in 30 days, to call again.
We never heard anything, so called again at the end of April. The person I talked to spent a lot of time again, trying to figure it out. She couldn't see why the refund had not been released. She was going t refer it to another department, said if we didn't hear anything in 60 days, to call.
Well, a few days ago my husband received a letter that he owes the same amount that they said we were due! The letter says "we recently contacted you about your past due taxes". This is the first notice we've received, now they're threatening Notice of Federal Tax Lein.
How on earth do I sort this out? I've been on with the IRS twice before, each time was on for about an hour and a half. I am currently on hold trying to get through and it's been an hour. I was disconnected several times before I finally got through to a point I'm on hold to talk to someone. I'm worried it will disconnect me again at any moment!
I would appreciate any advice anyone has on how to figure this out!
By the way the taxpayer advocate site is down.
Help!
