From what I understand, the only thing you changed on your return for the amendment was adding interest income.

The reason that the overall income changes by more than the added interest income is because of your Social Security income. Based on your level of income, some of your Social Security benefits are taxable. Therefore, when you add more income to your return, more of your Social Security benefits become taxable. You can see this happening on line 6b of your updated 1040. Compare the amount on that line before and after adding the interest. The difference there is equal to the amount of extra income being added on the 1040X in addition to the interest income.

It seems that you had your overpayment applied to your 2025 estimated tax when you filed your original 2024 return. This election is irrevocable. Now that you have additional tax due on your amended return, you can't have the overpayment applied to that balance. You will need to make the payment with the amendment.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
