After you file
No, you should not amend your return simply to change on what line certain income items were reported.
That is not a situation that requires an amended return and it may further delay the processing of your return.
You can take look at your return to see if in fact you did report the unemployment in the wrong section of your return. That way you will know if there was a mistake or if the person that told you so happened to be wrong.
Looking at your Form 1040, your wages income will be reported on line 7 and unemployment will be reported on line 19. If you filed Form 1040A, look at lines 7 and 13. If you filed Form 1040EZ, look at lines 1 and 3.
If a letter was actually sent to you on March 2, then you should be receiving it very soon. If you do not receive a letter, I would recommend that you call the IRS again to inquire about the status.
