After you file
Your name being spelled wrong is not an issue. Your household income becomes the problem. Check below to see if the additional income disqualifies your partner from the credit. If disqualified, your partner can amend the MN property tax credit. Amending a Property Tax Refund.
Otherwise, no need to do anything.
The income levels vary based on homeowner or renter.
Homeowner requirements:
- Your total household income must be less than $139,320.
- You must be a Minnesota resident or part-year resident to qualify for a property tax refund. For more information, go to MN DOR
- You must have owned and occupied your home on January 2, 2025.
- Your property must be classified as your homestead, or you must have applied for homestead classification and had it approved (see page 4). • Your homestead must have no delinquent property taxes. Generally, property taxes are not delinquent if you have either paid them or signed a confession of judgement.
Renter requirements:
To qualify, all of these must be true:
- You have a valid Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
- You are a Minnesota resident or spent at least 183 days in the state
- You lived in and paid rent on a Minnesota building where the owner was assessed property tax or made payments in lieu of property tax
- Your household income for 2023 was less than $73,270
- You cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return
