After you file
Run through the steps below again to be sure you didn't miss something.
- Open the TurboTax Desktop software for the year you're amending. For example, you must amend your 2023 return in the 2023 version of TurboTax. Allow any updates that are requested.
- Under "Hi, Welcome to TurboTax!" look for Need to Amend a Filed Return? Click the box for Amend a Filed Return.
- Select Amend for the return you need to amend. If the return you need doesn’t appear as an option, select Find a Tax File in the middle of the page to find and load the return.
- When the file opens, you should see "We'll help you change (amend) your return" with three steps to complete.
- Click Continue and answer the questions "Did you already file your return?" and "Tell us more..."
- On the page "What do you need to change on your return?", select Update next to the info you need to change.
- Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, then click Done.
- Follow the prompts to carefully answer the remaining questions, including the reason for amending your return.
- TurboTax will review your entries and let you know if there are any form errors.
- When you're ready, go to File and submit your amended return.
- Don’t forget to select Save As (or Duplicate on Mac) from the File menu when you save a copy of your amended return. This will preserve the tax return you originally filed. Give the file a different name from the original, like [tax year]_amended_tax_return_Smith.
Depending on the changes you made and your reason for filing an amended return, you may be able to e-file. Otherwise, TurboTax will guide you to printing the necessary forms to file by mail.
