It's unclear. However for future information - the IRS will compare the first four digits of the last name with the social security number, as indicated by @DaveF1006. Any variation will reject. The middle initial should not cause any issue, however it is early in the filing season. Thank you for confirming your return did go through and was accepted after your change.
