After you file
What mistake did you make?
You return may be rejected by the IRS due to your mistake. If so, just log back in, fix it, and then refile your return.
You should amend your return if you reported certain items incorrectly on the original return, such as filing status, dependents, total income, deductions or credits.
However, you don’t have to amend a return because of math errors you made; the IRS will correct those.
If your return gets accepted you won't be able to amend your return yet because the IRS hasn't released Form 1040X, the amended return form. You should also wait until your return is fully processed (you receive your refund) before amending it to avoid confusion.
Check back in late February, when Form 1040X is typically released.
If you prepared your original tax return using TurboTax:
- Log in to your account.
- Open the tax return you already filed.
- Click on the link to amend your return (which won't be available until mid-to-late February).
- The software will walk you through the process of filing the amendment.
