After you file
There are a couple of possible reasons that could cause a delay in the processing of your return:
First, your return status might be “Pending” due to security issues. This could be a sign that someone is trying to use your identity to fraudulently file a tax return, in which case the return would have been placed on hold to allow you the opportunity to cancel it if it doesn't belong to you. This can take up to 72 hours, after which your return will then be forwarded to the IRS, or if applicable, rejected. If rejected, you can then correct the rejection issue and resubmit. Second, there could be a delay if your return has certain refundable credits. This includes the Earned Income Credit and the Child Tax Credit.
Note: Both situations may be applicable to the same return. That is, you could have a hold for security reasons, and also for verification of the refundable credit(s) in your return. In this case, the delay could extend beyond 72 hours.
