whoever told you $63K didn't explain it well. That would be for MFJ and 3 dependents not HOH with 1.
For HOH with 1 qualifying child, the EIC disappears if earned income is over $46,560. so if you got $165 EIC your earned income was between $45,500 and $45,550. As you can see this is nowhere near the $63K cited.
