After you file

If IRS can see your error on 1040-X, it will be REJECTED, and that's that.

IRS will respond with the status of your amendment.

I was avoiding the use of the term "rejected."  If you e-filed the 1040x, it was accepted into the IRS system if the basic info matched (income, social security numbers, birthdates).  It would be "rejected" electronically if the basic info didn't match.   However, that doesn't mean the IRS agrees or disagrees with the changes.  It takes 4-6 months for the IRS to review an amended return.  If they agree with the amended return, they will pay a refund if you requested one.  If you did not request a refund, you might not get any notification that they agree with your amended return.  If they disagree with your amended return, they will probably send you a letter.

If you get a letter of the IRS refusing you amended return or asking for more information, you can respond by saying you made a mistake and asking them to cancel or withdraw the amended return.   But if they accept the amended return and pay your additional refund, then you would have to file a second amended return.
