After you file

You need to respond to the letter.

Pull together your information for that year, including all your sources of income.

Make a list and add up the total income.  Verify that your income and source of income meets the following criteria

If your income is below the minimum filing requirements for the year and you did not earn income from a job or self-employment, you do not need to file a tax return. The minimum filing requirements for taxpayers under 65 and not blind in 2011 are:

Single $ 9,500

Married Filing Jointly $19,000

Married Filing Separately $ 3,700

Head of Household $12,200

Qualifying Widow(er) $15,300

If you are self-employed you must file if you earned $400 or more.

Respond to IRS with the list and total income and explain you meet the standards set forth and were not required to file.

Keep the originals and mail copies to IRS...I suggest mailing return return receipt required.
