Amending a return using different versions.
I prepared my 2019 return with TurboTax Premiere. I have an LLC and it was a pain to use that version to include my data; I have both W2 and 1099-Misc income for that year. Premiere does it but doesn't really help very much. Using the TurboTax web selector process I followed the recommendation therein which is for my situation to use 2022 Home & Business and it was much easier to prepare the return.
In 2019 I was in the process of buying a house at the same time I was doing my taxes and got into a rush. I am confident, based on some recent experimentation with 2022 H&B that if I had used 2019 Home and Business that I would have reduced my taxes significantly.
So, yesterday I bought 2019 Home and Business and will get the disk tomorrow ($25 from Walmart!). I plan on preparing my 2019 taxes and generating an amended return with it to see if it does indeed reduce my taxes. The question I have is, do I:
- prepare the amended return using the 2019 Premiere file as a starting point, or
- use the 2018 file to start the return, or
- some other option I haven't thought of?
I suppose that this is really a "what can the software handle" question and not a tax form usage question. I want the code to step me through the process so that I can credit office space use and all the other options that pick up on business deductions that are appropriate for me to consider - which Premiere didn't do in 2019. I would appreciate any suggestions.
