Yes, I agree that you will risk underpayment penalty and interest if your estimated tax payment is not received when due. Once the IRS processes your Amended Form 1040X, they will adjust your overpayment and apply the difference to your 2023 estimated tax or they might accidentally send you a check with the adjusted refund. If a refund is sent to you, please mail this payment back to the IRS as soon as possible. Also, be aware that an amended return will take up to 3 weeks after you mailed it to show up in the IRS system, and processing it can take up to 16 weeks.
Your other option is to make the 2023 estimated tax payment online at IRS.Gov or mail in Form 1040-ES with your payment.
The deadlines for the tax year 2023 quarterly payments are:
- April 17, 2023
- June 15, 2023
- September 15, 2023
- January 16, 2024
Also, when making these payments online, please make sure you are selecting the correct quarter.
