After you file

If you received a Letter 12C from the IRS asking for additional forms such as Form 1095-A and Form 8962, and you’re due a refund, they normally expect to send it about 6-8 weeks after they receive your response. See this IRS webpage for more information.

If you contacted and already received a reply from the Taxpayer Advocate's office that they received your information on 3-10-23, one week ago, the extent to which they could expedite your refund may depend on the staffing level at that office.

If you are experiencing financial hardship, the IRS might be able to manually process your refund to get it to you sooner. Request an expedited refund by calling the IRS at 800-829-1040 (TTY/TDD 800-829-4059). You may experience extended hold times or requests to call back during filing season.

  • Explain your hardship situation; and
  • Request a manual refund expedited to you.

The IRS will likely request documentation of your financial hardship such as copies of shutoff notices, eviction or foreclosure notices, etc., as well as other supporting information like a copy of your tax return with the refund claim.  Respond promptly to the IRS’s request.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers and protects taxpayers’ rights. They can offer you help if your tax problem is causing financial difficulty, you’ve tried and been unable to resolve your issue with the IRS, or you believe an IRS system, process, or procedure just isn’t working as it should. If you qualify for their assistance, which is always free,

visit www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov or call 1-877-777-4778.
