Received a CP-2000 notice for tax year 2020, paid additional money to IRS but I have proof that it was not valid, can I get my money back?
Hi,
I received a CP-2000 notice for tax year 2020 in April 2022, which claimed that my taxable income was higher than reported. At that time I did not deeply investigate the changes and paid the IRS additional taxes in May 2022 along with the "substantial tax understatement penalty" and "interest rate" charges . I now realize that all that was not valid and have proof for the same, is it possible to get a tax refund for my situation? I also need to amend my return to show this additional changes for 2020 but that won't get me the refund on my CP-2000 notice payment I believe.
