After you file
Thank you for the explanation. I am almost certain now there is a bug in the program. I went in and deleted the added 1099 DIV, and then the1040x for federal and state (took me while to find how to do state, but I was successful). The refund numbers for federal and state did go back to the original filing numbers. I even took a PDF print preview of all forms and worksheets and it matched the original. I saved and exited. All was good so far and I was feeling like I was on the right track. Then I went back in to check it one more time, and it was all still good. I got out. I went back in and followed the amendment process. I clicked "Amend a filed return". Then I clicked "Amend". It spun for a while. The numbers at the top matched my original federal and state refund amounts. All good so far. Then I clicked continue where it said "We'll help you change (amend) your return. I selected, "Yes, I've filed". I selected, "I need to amend my 2022 return". Then at this point, changes started happening and I hadn't even entered anything yet. The state went to zero (as expected), but the federal showed a $12,000+ refund (as it did when I originally reported problems with the amendment process). At this point, because I hadn't even entered ANY changes yet, I went to the print forms screen, and did a print preview of the entire document and all worksheets, and on the 1040X, column A and B had numbers that I do not recognize, and there is a number on line 16 of a payment that I had not made. Again, it is doing what it did the first time I tried to amend. And, I repeat, I did not enter ANY amendment changes except saying that I wanted to amend. Can someone please help, or is this a reportable error? Thanks.
