After you file
You do need to be clear about the education credits and the 1098-T.
The 1098-T contains INFORMATION.
The 1098-T is entered into TurboTax to see if
There is an available Education Credit
There is taxable income which the student needs to report
Normally the Taxpayer claiming the student (parents) enters the 1098-T so that the program can do the math.
If there is a credit, the parents get the credit
If there is taxable income, the student claims that income.
HER TurboTax program might tell her that she is eligible for an Education Credit based on your 1098-T OR it might tell her that YOU need to claim income relating to the 1098-T, but HER program would not tell her that YOU are eligible for a refund.
To help, we would need more information, such as the numbers on the 1098-T and Form 8863 (which should have been generated as part of your mother's tax return.
