After you file

Q. Do I get a refund for my local income taxes?

A. Simple answer: No.  The reason they withheld the local tax is because you were subject to it.

That said, it depends on the details. Not all local taxes are the same. Generally, it works like this: you are subject to local income tax if you work in a city or county with an income tax. Your employer withholds the exact amount and you do not have to file a city income tax form.  But you can not get a refund unless your employer made a mistake.

For more specific advice, provide more detail: city(s) and state you live and work in. You may need to post a new question, in the state taxes section, to get a responder familiar with your state.  I only know Ohio.
