IRS just announced that is had finally caught up (end of June 2021) with 2020 tax returns that needed regular processing.
IRS has about the same backlog of 2021 tax returns now it had for last tax year.
Although IRS has some better procedures and a few more people assigned to the task, expect that paper returns will not be cleared out until Spring or Summer 2023.
IRS is now in permanent state of backlog.
