After you file

@Y2KB - the IRS processes their work in the order received - they have no idea what is simple or complex until they actually crack open the file.  RIght now, the best thing to do is 'do nothing'.  Wait until the amendment clears before sending in anything or calling the IRS.  Amending before the original is processed can confuse the issue even more - esp. if the IRS adjusts something that you were not aware of when completing the amendment.

if you submitted the Amendment in April, just check the IRS website ONCE PER MONTH to see if there is progress.  The IRS has committed to get back to normal processing times by the end of the year, but that is just a commitment; how they do that is another story.

Status of Processing Form 1040-X, Amended Individual Tax Return: As of July 2, 2022, we had 2 million unprocessed Forms 1040-X. We are processing these returns in the order received and are working hard to get through the inventory. The current timeframe can be more than 20 weeks instead of up to 16. Please don't file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your amended return. Taxpayers should continue to check Where's My Amended Return? for the most up to date processing status available.
