Missed reporting W2, received CP2000 for 2019. How to amend state tax return without 1040X?
Hi TT Experts,
Last year I received CP2000 for my 2019 returns - I missed reporting W2 from a prior employer that I quit in 2018 but had cashed my vested options in 2019. The notice said "Do not file an amended return (Form 1040X) if you fully agree with our changes. We'll make the correction when we receive your signed response." I agreed with the changes and paid the Federal taxes owed + interest + penalty. I recently got confirmation (CP21C) that they processed my response. Further, the CP21C states "Based on the information you provided, we changed your 2019 Form 1040 to correct your:
- income from wages, salaries, tips, etc.
- total federal income tax withheld
- excess social security tax or RRTA tax withheld
We changed the civil penalty amount that we previously charged. As a result you don't owe us any money, nor are you due a refund."
It turns out that the state taxes deducted from the unreported W2 exceed my state tax liability for 2019 (over and above the the 2019 CA 540 that I had filed originally) and I'm due a CA state tax refund. I have 2 questions:
(a) Since I don't have 1040X, what paperwork should I include with 2019 Schedule X (California Explanation of Amended Return Changes) besides the W2 I had missed earlier? Should I include the Wage and Income Transcript downloaded from IRS showing the missed W2, the CP2000 and CP21C?
(b) In TurboTax 2019, should I simply include the unfiled W2 to recompute my Federal and State as an amendment to my 2019 returns to generate the necessary forms that I would need to file with my CA 2019 Schedule X? Any suggestions/recommendations?
Thanks a bunch for your help!
