After you file
If you mailed in your return, it can take up to 6 months for a mailed in return to be processed. The IRS is backlogged and taking allot longer to process mailed in returns, so time lines of when a return/refund would be processed is not the norm because of the backlog.
On an mailed in return you don't get a notice whether your return has been accepted or rejected. You can keep checking the IRS website, Where's My Refund. The website only updates once a day.
Is the IRS still behind processing paper returns?
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the IRS has fallen nearly a year behind in processing paper tax returns. As of March 18, 2022, the paper return backlog stood at nearly 15 million. Most taxpayers receive refunds, so return processing delays generally mean refund delays. Apr 15, 2022
