Incorrectly Filed Nonresident Return in Reciprical State
I filed my taxes for federal and state. The PA state tax return was filed electronically. The NJ state tax returns need to be mailed by tomorrow. Unfortunately one of the NJ state tax returns is incorrect. I filed a nonresident and a resident return since I lived in NJ part of the year. But I didn't need to file a nonresident return because I lived in a reciprocal state, PA. Therefore it incorrectly looks like I didn't pay any tax to NJ all year. I will amend the return as soon as TurboTax gives me the option. I'm guessing it will show up after the PA return goes from pending to accepted. After I amend the NJ nonresident return to be removed, I expect I will owe no tax since I only needed to pay PA. Therefore, should I send in my nonresident tax return tomorrow? And, should I make payment online tomorrow as well to NJ? I'm thinking I should send in my NJ returns tomorrow, but not pay yet. Instead I could just send in my amendment ASAP. Is this correct?
