After you file

identification verification is solely on the IRS. evidently, in some prior year, a return was filed using an SSN on your return that wasn't really filed by you.

ID verification is not an audit.   audit protection is for situations where the IRS changes things on your return and you don't agree with this (or for that matter state changes).   AP is not a guarantee that your return is correct only that a third party will intercede and handle audits and changes.  if changes are warranted, then AP will not benefit you. you'll have to pay the additional taxes, interest and penalties. AP is not the Turbotax guarantee that the calculations are correct. if Turbotax does miscalculate, you'll have to file a claim and pay the IRS bill.  if it is a Turbotax error, then you'll be reimbursed for penalties and interest but not the taxes ( you would have owed them anyway)
