After you file
It depends on what changes are reported on the corrected forms. Don't make any changes in your tax return until after you have started your amendment. Directions are below.
My guess would be that they corrected the 1099-NEC to $0 and issued a 1099-MISC in the same amount.
If your corrected 1099-NEC shows $0 in box 1 (and box 4, if that is filled out), you can delete your 1099-NEC and enter your 1099-MISC instead. If you paid self-employment tax on the amount, this will result in a refund.
If your corrected 1099-NEC has figures greater than $0, you will need to correct the figures rather than discard the form. In that case, also enter the 1099-MISC.
Here is how to start your amended return.
If you used TurboTax Online:
- Log in to your account, scroll down the first page and select 2021, then Amend using TurboTax Online.
- Answer the first few questions, then select your reason for amending.
- Delete or correct your 1099-NEC. Add your 1099-MISC.
- Keep going until you submit your amended tax return.
If you used our CD/download product:
- Open up your return and select “Amend a filed return.”
- Answer the first few questions, then select your reason for amending.
- Delete or correct your 1099-NEC. Add your 1099-MISC.
- Keep going until you submit your amended tax return.
Please note, if your refund or balance due does not change, you do not have to file the amendment.
