used wrong form 1040 instead of 1040NR
Hi,
I didn't know that I was supposed to use Sprintax and submit 1040 NR, and rather used Turbotax and sent 1040 for the tax year 2020 and got 1800$ refunded by direct deposit through Turbotax. (Turbotax took $253 for the processing fee so what I got was $1500 ish) I think it was because they accidentally determined me as a resident alien and gave me the educational tax credit from tuition.
I searched that I'll have to do this;
- Form 1040X
- Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ with “AS AMENDED” written on top of each page, and
- a copy of the Form 1040 you originally submitted with “COPY OF ORIGINALLY SUBMITTED” on top of each page.
My question is, do I have to include the check with the forms that I'm sending to the IRS? But since Turbotax got the service fee of $253, should I send it back through Turbotax? Or do I send an $1800 check to IRS and forget about the service fee since it's only for the processing fee?
Thank you.
