After you file
@ vonpowell wrote:I am having the same issue. We are filing as Married Filing Jointly. I am listed first and my spouse second. All our personal information is correct (name, SSN, address, Filing Pin) and consistent with previous filings. After filing, I got a rejection notice (via text) from the IRS. When I look under "Check E-file Status," the message is "The IRS Couldn't Confirm (Spouse's) Identity."
I have put in the correct 2020 AGI. Rejected again.
On the advice of a TurboTax specialist, I entered my wife's AGI. Rejected again.
On the advice of a TurboTax specialist, my wife obtained an Identification Protection Pin. I entered it and re-filed twice, once with our total AGI and once with my wife's AGI. I was rejected twice.
Are there any other proposed solutions out there?
Without the rejection error code, I don't understand the first rejection you mentioned above and its use of the word "identity." Was it referring to a 6-digit IP PIN, or something in the spouse's personal ID info (SSN, DOB), or was it referring to the 2020 AGI? That short description you wrote sounds like some TurboTax message and not the actual IRS message, which uses different wording. The codes or exact IRS message are important to be sure everyone is talking about the same thing.
As for the subsequent rejections, what is the exact rejection error code and message you are most recently getting?
NOTE: You said you were filing married jointly for the 2021 return, but didn't say outright how you filed the 2020 return, so I will assume that your 2020 return was also married filing jointly.
Normally, when 2020 and 2021 returns both have a filing status of married filing jointly, one would use the same total 2020 AGI for both spouses (without splitting it), but there are a couple of exceptions as mentioned below.
By the way, be sure you are using the AGI from the original 2020 return--not an amended one (if applicable).
If you are getting an AGI rejection in regard to the spouse (code IND-032-04), have you tried using the total 2020 AGI for yourself and an AGI of 0 (zero) for the wife? Some users have reported that unexplainedly worked for them.
If that doesn't work, here's a scenario where you may have to use AGI of 0 for both of you:
If you filed the 2020 return real late in the year last year, or if the IRS had not finished processing it prior to November 2021, you can try using an AGI of 0 (zero) for both of you. In any case, if nothing else has worked, it's worth a try regardless, if necessary.
