After you file

If your 2017 tax return is not filed, regardless of the statute that has expired to receive a refund, the tax return will never expire for review by the IRS.  Until a tax return is filed, the statute of limitations does not expire.  It's important to file your tax return because under federal tax law, there is no statute of limitations period for assessing taxes when the taxpayer does not file a tax return.
