First, find the exact amount the IRS states you received for the third stimulus payment. You can find this information in several ways. You can look:
- On your IRS Letter 6475, or
- On the IRS View Your Account Information page, or
- In your bank statements. You might be able to search your online statements for deposits made by the IRS or US Treasury
If it shows $2,800 being sent for the third stimulus payment, but you did not receive it, then it is best to start a payment trace. To start a payment trace, call the IRS at 800-919-9835 and mail or fax a completed Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.
The Recovery Rebate Credit is for taxpayers who did not get the stimulus payment but now qualify based on their 2021 return. This is a credit (on Line 30 of your 1040) that will either increase your refund or decrease the amount of tax owed.
