After you file
I'd like to sympathize with those poor IRS workers, but I ain't gonna. I just got the answer to my long wait for my return. Just got "The Letter" from the IRS asking for supporting documents. Same letter as I got two years ago. Because I filed electronically with TT, they need proof (documents) of what I'm claiming. My wife and I purposely have extra taxes taken out of our Social Security and small retirement benefits so that we have money in March or April to pay our bills. I guess this sends up a red flag due to our nice refund. At TT's suggestion, we take standard deduction. We don't itemize. If these poor workers are, in fact, overworked, how do they justify picking on poor, honest people?
So I'll go through the paces, copying our documents and send their forms back certified mail (another expense), just so I can get my refund. For me, this is the end of using TT and the end of filing electronically. Total BS if you ask me. Thank God my wife and I are nearing our 80's and the end of this grief.
