After you file
Actually, I owe money, and put in the wrong total interest I earned last year. And I also accidentally entered interest I had made on a bank account in 2020. Two undershot and one overshot, but I owe around 100-200 dollars more than I had entered. Anyway, I didn't file my NY State return luckily, because turbotax didn't have all the NY forms yet - so another question I have is whether after I finally can do the 1040x and pay the extra money, will the correct figures automatically provide me with the correct information for my NY return? That is, will turbotax enter the new total income (and a couple of missing charitable deductions) based on the 1040x.
I still don't fully understand your reply to be honest - the turbotax website says you CAN file the 1040x once IRS has accepted your 1040 if you owe money, which I do. And IRS said the 2021 1040x is available, but turbotax says it won't be until Feb. 24, so which is it, and if it's Feb 24, then why doesn't turbotax have the 1040x ready yet to file (for folks who owe a bit more money than what I accidentally put in my 1040).
PS - I kind of find your comment about 'panicking' inappropriate - that's a mischaracterization; rather, it's called wanting to do the right thing, even if it means paying more tax.
