Big Bug when amending a return from MFS to MSJ, losing $12.4K
My wife doesn't have an ITIN so I filed as Married Filing Separately for 2020. Then I am trying to append with an ITIN for her by selecting Married Filing Jointly. According to the calculations, I should get a refund of 18K. But Turbotax is showing my return as around 5K. This is really messed up, because when I was originally computing MFS it was showing 13K debt and MFJ was showing 5K return. Since I already filed as MFS, I paid 13K to IRS with the first MFS return. So the amendment as MFJ should get back 13+5=18K.
Upon going through the resultant 1040X form, I noticed that Turbotax was taking initial standard deduction as $24800. That is absolutely wrong because the standard deduction I claimed in MFS was only $12400. My wife didn't file anything since she was NRA with no income or ITIN earlier. There is no way to override this in Turbotax software, standard deduction is automatically taken.
Intuit, please fix this bug, I would have lost $12.4K if I trusted your software. And I already paid you 90$ for your software, and you won't let me talk to a live person without paying another 80$!
