After you file
Here's my issue with TurboTax. One of the Champ's here has posted the standard message from the IRS website a couple of times, but conveniently doesn't bold the following portion of the IRS' message:
Unprocessed returns include those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund. If, as a result, a correction is made to any RRC, EITC or ACTC claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation.
These provisions were passed into tax law legislatively, but TurboTax informs you as you prepared your 2020 tax return for the EITC that using the 2019 income would increase your credit (and your refund). That election is what is causing the delay since the 2019 income has to be manually verified. TurboTax KNEW THIS before tax returns due date. Why didn't they provide a message indicating there could be a delay if the 2019 income was used and indicate the benefit/increase in the credit for using the 2019 income, so you could decide if it was worth risking the additional wait time for your refund? In this case, my 27 yo son's refund was only increased by $4 as a result of using the 2019 income. Sure would have been nice to understand that and I would have made the safer election (using 2020 income). We're up to 60 days since his return was accepted and this kid is only working part-time jobs and in need of his refund. This is the 2nd thing TurboTax FFF'd up on 2020 tax filings and makes me seriously question whether I will stop using them going forward.
