After you file

The IRS will only communicate with you by letter. If an email, text or phone call is received, it is not the IRS. Your refund status should only be checked there or at TurboTax here: E-File Status Lookup Tool

If the return was amended, then go to: Where's My Amended Return? | Internal Revenue Service.

Otherwise, to check the status of your account, create or log in to your account here: IRS View Your Tax Account.

It is possible that the amended return was not necessary. The IRS will automatically calculate many of the changes from the 2020 tax law changes enacted March 11, 2021.

What to do now:

  1. Check whether or not the refund was included in the calculations of any balance due, check Form 1040-X, Line 18, which is: Overpayment, if any, as shown on original return or as previously adjusted by the IRS. It should include the original refund amount.
  2. Check Do I need to amend? to verify that an amended return was required.
    1. If it was not required after all, file another amended return to restore the tax return to the original filing.
    2. To contact the IRS, see:
      1. IRS Let Us Help You
      2. Or create or login to your account: IRS: View Your Tax Account Information
  3. Just to confirm, verify that the correct account information is entered:
    1. Which number on my check is the routing number?
    2. Where do I enter my bank's routing or account number?
