It depends. If the IRS accepts your return, you wait until it has been processed and you receive your refund and /or paid your tax liability. If your return is rejected, you can make the necessary changes and re-submit your return. Otherwise, you need to file 1040X to amend your federal income tax and mail it to the IRS.
