After you file
Thank you for your answer. I want to give you the specifics so I'm sure I'm doing the right thing. It is for my daughter who can no longer be claimed as a dependent but lived in Florida for several months at the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020 doing the Disney College Program. We declared her as a dependent in 2019, not 2020. She is currently in college (part-time 1st semester of 2020, full-time 2nd semester of 2020). On Turbo Tax when it asked if she lived in another state, I said yes. We later realized that she wasn't a "legal resident" of the state but too late, I had already e-filed federal for her. So I saved my Turbo Tax file under another name and changed it to show that she did not live in another state. What happened then was the amount she was due refunded from federal went up (a lot - credits for tuition) and the state went down. In your message you had said, DO NOT go in and start changing... Her federal return has been accepted. I want to send the correct information to the state the first time if possible (because her refund is less with the change). Do I send the new file with everything corrected (state and federal) and plan to do the amended federal change when it becomes available, anticipating that she would receive the additional refunded amount in a subsequent check later? Thank you for your help!
