After you file

There is nothing to do until you receive a reply from the IRS.  They do seem to have a time delay, however you should always expect at least 8 weeks during the tax season and sometimes less during the off season before receiving a response.

If you become concerned you you should contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS).

TAS is an independent organization within the IRS. Our job is to ensure that every taxpayer is treated fairly and that you know and understand your rights.

As for the Recovery Rebate Credit and deceased taxpayers for your son's 2020 return:

Here is the information from the Form 1040 Instructions, page 57 (printed below for your convenience).

Generally, you are eligible to claim the recovery rebate credit if in 2020 you were a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien, weren't a dependent of another taxpayer, and have a valid social security number. This includes someone who died in 2020, if you are preparing a return for that person. Use the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet to figure the credit, if any, you can claim. For more information on the recovery rebate credit click the hyperlink.

You can be confident to enter the correct information in TurboTax Online with exactly the amounts he may have received. There is no reason to wait to file the current tax return.
