After you file
If you already E-Filed it, you would have to wait and see if your return was accepted or rejected.
If the IRS rejects your E-Filed income tax return, you could change the stimulus amount.
If the IRS accepts your E-Filed income tax return and your stimulus amount is wrong, you'll have to see if the IRS catches the error.
- If they catch it, they'll send you an explanation letter stating that your refund or amount due is different and the changes they made.
- If they don't catch it, you'll need to amend your income tax return. Note: You won't be able to amend a 2020 income tax return until the IRS informs us that they are accepting amended returns.
