After you file
After the due date (July 15, this year), you CANNOT change the filing status from joint because both spouses on a joint return are equally liable for everything on a joint return and a spouse cannot remove them self from that liability after the due date - that is the tax law.
The only exception is if the joint return was invalid because you were not legally married. In that case the return still cannot be amended but must be declared invalid by the IRS. There is a special procedure that usually requires a tax professional to do.
