I accidentally filed an old W-2. What do I do?

After you file

You would have to amend your return to remove the wrong W2 and enter the correct one. Amended returns must be mailed.

If this was on your 2016 return, you should wait until your return has been fully processed (refund received or if taxes owed payment has cleared) before you amend. The IRS gets copies of all W2's, they may send you a letter asking about the mismatch with what they have & the W2 you filed.

You won't get into trouble. It is easy to amend your return, follow the instructions above. You should get instructions on where to mail your amended return but in case you don't, see the following. Use the address for the State you live in.

Yiu would mail in your amened return and a copy of the correct W2.

After you file

Okay thank you so much! So as soon as I get my correct W-2, I send it in with the amend form??

After you file

Yes, each copy should tell you what iti is for. For ex. Copy B is for your Federal. Send that in with the amended return.

After you file

okay thank you so much! I was so worried I would have to pay a penalty or get into a lot of trouble. I'm not sure when the W-2 that I need will come in so I hope it doesn't take too long.

After you file

Also how long will it take for the amend to go through and for them to get back to me?? or will they fix it for me? I don't know what to do after I send it

After you file

If this is for your 2016 return and you will owe taxes with the new W2, you have until 4/18/17 to pay taxes owed without a penalty. If you are due a refund there is no penalty. If you don't get a letter from the IRS, they most likely did not fix it. You can also check Where's My refund, they do put information if a return is adjusted.

An amened return can take 8 to 16 weeks to process. You can check the status of an amended return.

Tracking your amended return. You can track the status of your Federal amended return using the IRS website ?Where's My Amended Return? or you can call 1-866-464-2050, (You need to wait about 3 weeks from the date you mailed your amended return for information to show up in their system).

Also, see the following about not receiving your W2.

so i filed a state amended return and i printed out all of the papers and one of the papers say "Your Pennsylvania state amended tax return shows that you owe a balance due of $104.00" what do i do?? why do i have to pay??

After you file

Do you delete your old W2 before you entered your current W2?

After you file

it just asked if i wanted to edit one, so i edited the one that i put my 2015 W-2 in, to my 2016 one

After you file

Then the reason you may owe would be not enough taxes were taken out compared to your income.
