This is normal.  When you start an amendment, the refund meter will go to zero.  This is because the refund meter during the amendment process only shows the differences between your original return and your amended return.  Your original refund will still be paid to you.  So, if your original refund was $1000 and now after you make changes it says you owe $100, that means you have to send back $100 from the original $1000 refund, not that your entire refund has been lost and now you owe $100.  If you have made changes and it still shows 0, then that means there was no change to your tax liability based off the changes you made.
