After you file
You can do this in the TurboTax CD/Download versions, but be very careful. You should first save your return with another name and make a copy your return by selecting Save As (or Duplicate in Mac) from the File menu.
- You'll be renaming and working with this copy. This preserves your original return "as is." Make sure that you don't make changes in the return that you intend to file for 2016.
You can also use the What-If-Worksheet in your 2016 software to try out scenarios without making a copy. You can find that by going to the Forms mode (Upper left corner in a MAC) and searching for it . See the screenshots below.
