After you file

I, supposedly, have filed my 2019 federal taxes with Turbo Tax.  I have printed a copy of my return.  Now I would like to know the status of my return, i.e., has it been accepted  by the IRS, etc.  I am obviously failing to follow the directions properly in my attempts to secure this information for whatever reason.  HELP!

I assume you are trying to find out the status of the efile itself--whether the efile was successful and your return accepted by the IRS for processing, or if it was rejected or still pending.

We don't know what directions you were following to check on the efile status.  But the method varies according to what product you are using.  More on that below.

How long has it been since you efiled?  This time of year it may still be in "pending" status longer than usual.   After efiling,  about 24-48 hours later you "should" normally get an email about whether your efiled return was accepted or rejected.  However,  the IRS only started up this week for processing, so there can be longer delays this time of year due to a large backlog during their first week.   So it could be in "pending" status longer than 24-48 hours.

You "should" get an email notice when your efiled return is accepted or rejected.  If there has been plenty of time, and you haven't received it, also be sure to look in your spam/junk folders in case it ended up there.

We can tell you alternatives on other ways to check to see if your Federal return was successfully efiled and accepted, or if it was rejected, or if it's still pending.   But we don't know yet if you are using Online TurboTax or if you used desktop software (CD/download).   Once we know, we can tell you how/where to look.

Once you know if the return was accepted, and if you are due a Federal refund, we can tell you how to monitor the progress at the IRS as it processes through their system.

Once your efiled return has been accepted,  and if your printed copy has all the worksheets, it should have a page called "Electronic Postmark",  which would show your efile dates, acceptance, etc.  If you are using desktop software (CD/download), there is an additional way to get that info from inside the software.
